I am frequently asked what the "rules" are for addressing envelopes for birth announcements and invitations.
Here are a few guidelines to follow-
Inner Envelopes
Inner envelopes are only necessary on formal invitations such as weddings or black tie events. Birth Announcements and Children's party invitations do not require inner envelopes.
If you are including inner envelopes write out the name of the people invited to the event. Avoid writing "family" and instead spell out all the guests names.
Outer Envelopes
Outer envelopes should include any professional titles such as Doctor spelled out in their entirety. Titles such as Mr. and Mrs. can be abbreviated.
Street names should be spelled out including Boulevard, Lane etc.
Zip codes and house numbers should be in figure form.
Envelopes for formal events should be handwritten. It is acceptable for less formal mailings such as birth announcements, holiday cards, and birthday invitations to be typed either on the envelope or on a mailing label.
